The Bismarck was the first of two battleships of the Bismarck class to be built for the German Kriegsmarine. Launched on February 14, 1939 and commissioned in August 1940, the HMS Bismarck represented the pinnacle of German engineering in battleship construction. The ship was characterized by its enormous displacement (over 45,000 tons), its strong armour and its main armament, with eight 380 mm guns in four twin turrets. In May 1941, the Bismarck undertook its only combat voyage in the Atlantic. Its objective was to attack Allied convoys. The highlight of the operation was the battle in the Denmark Strait, in which the Bismarck sank the British battlecruiser HMS Hood, the pride of the Royal Navy. This success made the German battleship the main target of the British fleet. After an intensive pursuit, the Bismarck was surrounded and badly damaged by 15 Fairley Swordfish torpedo bombers on May 26, 1941. A day later, a fleet of British battleships reached the Bismarck and sank the damaged giant after a short battle.
Although her service was short, she went down in history as one of the most famous warships in the world.
