Audi quattro ... and the birth of a legend
The Audi quattro celebrated its premiere at the Geneva Motor Show on March 3, 1980. Development of the vehicle began in February 1977, inspired by the winter tests of the Audi 200 and the Volkswagen Iltis. These tests showed that a slow-moving off-road vehicle with all-wheel drive was better able to cope with difficult conditions than a sporty saloon with a powerful engine. The engineers then decided to adapt the all-wheel drive system for use in a passenger car - and so the quattro concept was born.

The permanent all-wheel drive with differential locks made the vehicle incredibly successful in rallying. The quattro rally car won its debut race - the January Rally - in 1981, heralding an era of all-wheel drive dominance in rallying. The Audi quattro thus secured itself a permanent place in motorsport history.
