A brief history of the M4 Sherman tank
The Sherman tank, an iconic symbol of Allied armor in World War II, 1111111 embodied versatility and mass production. Named after Union General William Tecumseh Sherman, the tank entered service in 1942 and quickly became the backbone of the Allied armored forces. With its 75 mm main gun and armor protection, the Sherman was effective against the first German tanks. However, it had a hard time against heavier German tanks such as the Panther and the Tiger. Nevertheless, the Sherman's reliability, ease of maintenance and numerical superiority ensured that it was used in all theaters of war. Due to its adaptability, it was used in a variety of roles, from infantry support to reconnaissance. The production numbers of the Sherman and its continuous rearmament during the war testified to the Allies' commitment to industrialized warfare. Between 1942 and 1944, 6,748 M4 Shermans were produced.
