A brief history of Panzer III tanks
The Panzer III was the first German medium tank, developed in the 1930s. It was originally designed to combat enemy tanks and served alongside the similar Panzer IV, which was larger and originally designed as an infantry support tank. Around 100 Panzer IIIs were used in the invasion of Poland and around 350 in the French campaign. The Panzer IIIs were the best tanks at the time. After the invasion of the Soviet Union, however, the Panzer III was inferior to the mighty T-34, and its small turret ring limited the possibility of equipping it with more powerful anti-tank guns. The Panzer III eventually swapped its role with the Panzer IV and became a support tank for the infantry, as the Panzer IV was upgraded with the long-barrelled 7.5 cm KwK 40 gun and was better armored.

The Panzer IIIs were used in the invasion of Poland, the Battle of France, Operation Barbarossa and the Battle of Kursk in the Soviet Union, as well as in the North African campaign. Many of them were still in action against the Western Allies in 1944-1945: at Anzio in Italy, in Normandy and during Operation Market Garden in the Netherlands. Even after production was discontinued, the robust, reliable and durable chassis of the Panzer III formed the basis for one of the most successful self-propelled guns of the Second World War, the Sturmgeschütz III (StuG III). Among the variants of the Panzer III from A to N, the Ausf. J was the most produced, of which around 1521 were manufactured in 1941 and 1942.
