The history of German submarines - horrors of the deep
"U-Boot" (short for "submarine") spread fear and terror on the seas and oceans. German submarines were a symbol of effective surprise attacks from the depths. Their history goes back to the First World War, but it was not until the Second World War that they were nicknamed the "wolf packs" that hunted down Allied convoys. The Type VII, which included the U-52, was the most widely used and extremely effective model. Despite their technological advances, these submarines were also deadly for their own crews - the mortality rate among submariners was among the highest in the Kriegsmarine.
Type VIIB - the new generation
The Type VIIB was an improved version of the Type VIIA. It had a longer range thanks to additional fuel tanks, improved maneuverability and a new torpedo tube arrangement that allowed it to carry up to 14 torpedoes. These submarines were also armed with an 8.8 cm cannon to destroy damaged ships and thus save torpedoes. Compact but deadly, they posed a threat even to the convoys they escorted.
U-52 - Lone hunter
U-52 was ordered in 1937, launched in 1938 and commissioned in February 1939. It operated under the command of Kapitänleutnant Wolfgang Barten. It took part in the Battle of the Atlantic, completed eight patrols and sank thirteen Allied ships. She reached a speed of 17.9 knots above water and 8 knots under water. She was decommissioned in 1943 and finally sunk in 1945. She was dismantled between 1946 and 1947.
