The Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit is an American strategic stealth bomber in a flying wing configuration, capable of carrying conventional and nuclear weapons. The B-2 was developed in response to Soviet radar systems. The program began in 1981 and the first flight took place in 1989. Over 130 aircraft were planned, but only 21 were produced after the end of the Cold War. The enormous costs meant that the price of a B-2 exceeded 2 billion US dollars, making it the most expensive aircraft in history. Thanks to its stealth technology and global range, which enables very long combat missions, the B-2 has been in use since 1999, including in Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq. In June 2025, B-2 bombers took part in bombing raids on targets in Iran and are still a key element of strategic deterrence today.
